Forty for Forty – #25. Desert Island Game

You know that Desert Island game? If not, it goes like this. If you were trapped on a Desert Island, name three movies or TV shows or songs that you would like to have with you to help kill the time. It’s a great little diversion aimed at getting you to narrow down your favorites. It speaks volumes of your life’s true loves. Of course, easier said than done. As with children, it can prove impossible to choose a favorite.

When I started this Forty for Forty series, one of the first topics that popped in my head was to do a Desert Island post. I thought that would be a good idea to let you all know what I treasure most in the world of entertainment. In fact, I’ve got a notebook upon which I scrawled a list of  bases I wanted to hit as I worked my way through this project. In the beginning, I numbered it 1 through 40 and just jotted down some stories I wanted to tell – little ‘Post-Its’ to remind me to tell the tale when I finally got around to them. Since I first made that list, I’ve revisited it and revised it countless times. Some topics have died on the vine. Others have been moved up. All these alterations coming as my mind chased down different avenues as the months wound their way to the main event – the big 4-0 in June. That’s getting a little too close for comfort.

One topic that hasn’t budged one bit is the Desert Island game. My original plan was to list a handful of my favorite items and hopefully draw all of you into the conversation where you could lay down your Top Three – whatever floats your boat. And I intend to list three but in the last week or two, I called an audible and have decided that if I were to pull a Cast Away and make a volleyball my new BFF for the next 4 years, there is only one thing that I would want with me. One thing that trumps everything else. Like the best of things, this one is completely hand-made. This one is personal. This one is from the heart. And this one is as much for all of you as it is for me.

So – if I did get stranded on that island, here’s what my original plan was. I’d bring the following:

1.   Green Day’s “Time of Your Life”

I don’t know what it is about that song but it just slays me. It seems tailor made for the big Hollywood montage AND it’s really about a “break-up” but it feels like a fitting end to things – a nice way to pay tribute to a time when everything in life clicked just right. I love this song. I never tire of it. It’s tethered to my heart and mind. And I could listen to it over and over again. And here’s a little teaser: it plays a prominent role in my first big play.

2.   Jaws – The Indianapolis Speech

Jaws is probably my favorite “summer movie”. It just works on a level that so many other blockbusters don’t and it’s anchored by three amazing performances – there’s such great chemistry between Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfus. Still, the scene that absolutely gets me every single time – more chilling than any surprise shark attack – is Quint’s retelling of his long days and nights spent bobbing in the water after the sinking of the Indianapolis. Amazing stuff!!!

3.   The Shawshank Redemption

I absolutely adore this film. The dialogue sings and the friendship between Tim Robbins’ Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman’s Red works my sentimental bone like nobody’s business. And let it be known here that if someone doesn’t stand up and recite the following at my funeral, I’m haunting every last one of you.

“Sometimes it makes me sad, though… Andy being gone. I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

So, that’s my original Desert Island list but in truth, this next item is the only thing that I really need:
