Last week, Aria bounded off the bus and ran over to me – dying to tell me about the story she wrote at school. As she’s a mere one month away from the start of summer and more importantly – her graduation from Kindergarten to 1st Grade – her class has begun cobbling together all they know of the written langauage and have been constructing tales of their own. For the longest time, Aria’s featured a poor wayward duck who got stuck in the mud and always needed a friend to come along and help it up. Some days it was another duck. Some a dog. Others a sheep or some other friendly farm animal.
But this time, the duck was replaced by a pteranadon and he flew far in the sky – high above the lowly muck and mire – flapping those glorious wings and soaring through the heavens.

Never having had a dog, I had no idea what that act actually entailed. A boy and his dog just seemed like such a cool, mythic thing – like an Old West gunslinger with his faithful steed. The sight of a boy scampering alongside his bounding companion felt ripped from legend. Iconic – and something I definitely wanted a piece of.
Never having had a dog, I had no idea how much responsibility they add. How you need to be real cognizant of their needs when giving the affirmative to every party Evite that comes your way. And weekend trips require particular sleight of hand to insure someone is nearby to feed them, let them out, and most importantly – spend some quality time just “shooting the breeze”. Human companionship comforts these canines.

Now this is getting ridiculous. No sooner do I put the final period on Colin’s 7th annual post does he up and drop another calendar on me. And worse yet – we’re now much close to the heart-racing teen years than we are to his first fledgling steps forth into this world. I’ve said it before and I’ll be saying it with frighteningly increasing frequency – Time Flies, Baby.
So with Colin turning eight, I wanted to pay tribute to a few of my little man’s milestones. These years fly because they are so full of event and discovery. Any parent will tell you that.
