What Goes On In Your Ed?

January 2011

This is a list of posts published in January 2011.

Excitement, She Wrote

My wife and I have been married for 10 years and together for close to 15 – having once upon a time, inked a plan for that pivotal First Date, way back in the Autumn of 1996.

It was the events that transpired on a little vacation getaway we took a short time after we began dating that have me shocked we lasted more than 5 months – let alone 15 years. After all, we almost kicked the bucket way back before we began living together.

But whatever doesn’t kill us merely makes us stronger, right. With a decade and a half under out belt, I’d say Andi and I are proof positive of that musty old maxim.

But that’s a tale for another day (next week – actually).

Today, I want to tell you all about how we began.

In October 1996, Andi had had enough. No longer could... Continue reading »

The Top 10 Movies That I Need to See on the Big Screen in 2011 – Part 2

The other day I offered up the first group of movies that I would love to see on the big screen in 2011. That doesn’t mean I will. In fact, I can assure you that most will flicker away once they’ve arrived via Netflix – but when I do make it to the theater in the upcoming year, it will be because of one or more movies on this list.

Today, I fill in the rest. And believe me – while the majority of this list is in some semblance of fuzzy order – meaning I could easily slot them lower or higher and not feel one bit of regret – my number one is there for a reason… and nothing is moving it. It is the one movie that I aim for on Opening Night. That it releases just after my birthday pretty much guarantees an excursion.

More on that ... Continue reading »

The Top 10 Movies That I Need to See on the Big Screen in 2011 – Part 1

This has become an annual tradition ’round these parts.

Each year, after I complete the previous year’s housekeeping through offering up by ‘Best Of’ lists – I like to give you all a sneak peek at what I’m looking forward to on the entertainment horizon. With Netflix, I’ll watch most anything – which partially explains why I settled down last Saturday eve to take in Piranha 3D (the other reason being Richard Dreyfuss in full Matt Hooper regalia).

But, it often takes spectacle to bring me to the theater. If I’m gonna’ trek out to catch something on the big screen, I need it larger than life – be that in things blowing up real good or huge laughs that sweep the audience up in their wave. The Oscar bait is usually reserv... Continue reading »

Try Hartter

Hands down, the coolest gifts the kids got for Christmas were these amazing framed, retro chic movie posters, designed and illustrated by our friend Sean Hartter.

ARIA ~ Princess of Unicorn Castle

COLIN – Lazer Knight of the Star Zone

Here’s how I came to know Sean.

Andi has one of those amazing friends who stand by your side, through thick and thin, throughout your entire life. With all the twists of the road that come our way in life, there isn̵... Continue reading »

Back to the Lab

I live with a cancer survivor.

Those of you who follow this Blog may recount the episode our family went through a few years ago, when Chatham – our precious eight year-old black lab pup – contracted the dreaded disease.

It was during a playful, peaceful sojourn to my father-in-law’s lake house in Maine, when I was tossing a ball into the water to the delight of Abby and Chatham and caught a glimpse of something that would rock our world quite a bit. It turns out, that tiny bump of flesh protruding through the fur on her right rear hind leg was a mast cell tumor – a cancerous mass that needed to be extricated immediately.

Because a dog’s hind leg is so narrow and thin, Chatham couldn’t give up the normal one-inch radius of skin that the oncologist would ... Continue reading »

Tube Tops – Fringe, Human Target & Community

A year ago at this time, I was getting ready to begin my fourth and final year recapping Lost. I remember weathering a slight bit of writer’s block at the beginning as the daunting prospect lay before me. After all – those recaps represented the building blocks of this site – as I turned to the “day after” digestion of each episode as my go-to source for inspiration when I first started posting on these pages back in the Winter of 2006. While I came to this party a little too late and therefore missed out on Blogging about the series since its inception in the Fall of ’2004, I truly feel like those Lost posts went a long way towards building this site into its current form.

This is my digital scrapbook. As the motto says, I promise to offer up what goes on in this Ed&#... Continue reading »

Snow Day

I think I’m supposed to hate snow days.

After all, I’m a man – for starters. And not the fancy pants metro type, either.

I’m a man’s man who enjoys gridiron grit, hoisting a mug of mead with me’ mates and singing along to the rock opera Evita. Hey, two out of three is closer than most.

Secondly – I’m pushing 40 which means I likely hit my half-life somewhere around the time Lindsay Lohan first went before the judge. That’s got to be like 5 years and 40 sentences ago which means I am officially on the porch, staring out at my sunset years and just daring you kids to come fetch your ball from my yard.

All right. That’s probably a bit of hyperbole especially for those of you know me – who REALLY know me – and know that ‘not t... Continue reading »

Just Wild About Harry

Editor’s Note: If anyone wants e-mail alerts when a new post is published (or to get a little synopsis of what it’s all about, shoot me an e-mail at theedzone@gmail.com and I’ll add you to the distribution list.

Harry Potter is bigger than Jar Jar.

What? You thought I was gonna’ go Jesus? Puh-leaze – The Beatles cornered the market on that brand of blasphemy decades ago. Me – I’d rather go bigger and take on The Force. It’s a slow news week and I can stand to take on a legion of jumping-mad Jedi, presuming they can stop fiddling with their lightsabers long enough to put me in that Vulcan Mind Grip they seem so fond of.

(… and that’s how you initiate a snark attack).

Truth be told, I ... Continue reading »

The Worst Movies I Dared to Watch in 2010

Last week, I gave up the goods – letting y’all know just which flicks I chose to watch in 2010 and which of those made my Top 7 Favorites of the Year list. I know seven is a bit arbitrary and I probably owe you three more, but I was starting with five originally and just decided at the last moment to tack on a couple more.

Well, I have no intention of tossing three more good flicks on the pile. What’s done is one. But I do have a few choice words to say about some of the absolute pablum and dreck that I dared invite into my home. That’s the flip-side to my Netflix affliction. When I’m not dropping 10-15 bones per flick, I’m more open to seeing most anything – and thus I keep my queue long and occupied. And while this tends to nourish me with a ni... Continue reading »

My Top 5…errrr, I mean, 7 Favorite Movies Screened in 2010

If you’re reading this, you’ve likely read my rambling preamble that I published the other day. If not, go back and read it. It’s one post below this one or better yet, you could just click here and add to my hit counts. I got kids to feed after all.

Anyway, this post accomplished two things. First off, it’s my annual rundown of my favorite movies seen in the past year. And while I haven’t seen everything, I did manage to screen 45 flicks released from the last quarter of 2009 through 2010. As I described in that prior post, most of my viewing comes via Netflix so some titles on this list may be plucked from last year. It doesn’t matter though. For my purposes, I’m offering up the list of my Top 7* Favorite Movies (screened by me for the first time) in 2010. Actual release d... Continue reading »
