My Top 10 Most Memorable Moments from Lost

So, in a few short days we reach the Beginning of the End. And then, in a few short months’ time, we’ll finally find ourselves waking on the morning after the final episode of Lost airs with mixed reactions. No doubt, some will treat whatever finale is cooked up as a slight on par with The Sopranos’ Fade to Black. While others will spy pure genius in Lindelof and Cuse’s swan song.

Personally, whatever dreams may come, I’m going to feel that bittersweet sting of melancholy. I firmly believe that regardless of what hidden truth lies at the end of this rainbow, the pure fun of this show has always been in the journey not the destination. Therefore, I don’t demand that they answer every question, tie every thread and dot every i. Hell, I don’t even need a full discourse ... Continue reading »

Bats in the Belfry

For the last five years, my family and I have lived off the beaten path – in a beautiful country style home set in the midst of the deep, dark woods. Situated in central Massachusetts, just South of Worcester and riding the crest of the Connecticut border, we’ve found one of those increasingly rare havens where the heavens beam a thousand points of light every time you toss open the shutters to sneak a peek at the great outdoors and the inky parchment above.

When we were seeking new shelter, we weren’t exactly in the market for solitude – just a nice rustic, yet newly constructed home on a decent slice of land that would allow our dogs and kids ample room to roam. We were coming from our modest Cape in the suburban environs outside the Brockton city center – and even though our neighborhood was ... Continue reading »

My Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2009

For the last few years, I have run the usual year-ending Top 5 Favorite Blah Blah Blah pieces, similar to the same content you’ll find on the more upscale and reputable entertainment websites. I used to offer up one post per discipline, covering the key movies, games and TV shows that entertained me greatly in the year prior. As I don’t watch as much TV as I used to (although that volume is beginning to rise), I kicked TV to the curb and simply run with the other two.

Last week I posted my Top 5 Favorite Video Games of 2009.

And now I reveal my Top 10 Favorite Movies of 2009.

When I sat down to inscribe this list, I was going to follow the same numbering scheme as the Game’s piece – keeping it to my five faves. But, I found I was having a real h... Continue reading »

My Top 5 Favorite Games of 2009

As I write this, mere days removed from Christmas, I look ahead to the bounty of games that Santa packed in that sack while looking back upon the year that was. And this year provided especially fertile ground for my personal picking, as it was the year in which I augmented my Wii60 household with one more shiny bauble; the PS3 finally descended to a price point that I could manage without listing yet another kidney on eBay. With Sony’s new slim sweetness nestled in my home entertainment center, the Holy Trinity was complete, allowing me to genuflect before the God of War for granting me the opportunity to finally guide Drake towards his fortune while scoping out a littlebigplanet of my own.

I know this time of year typically brings forth a plethora of “Best Of” lists. It seems the second the snow hits... Continue reading »

Instant Karma Resolution Day 13 – Behind the Curtain

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. Each day, I will randomly draw a name from my Friends List and make that person the subject of a status update where I will cull from memory some funny or interesting anecdote about the person. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. When you’ve been selected, I will also post this note to your wall and tag 5 of our mutual acquaintances in the hopes it will spur some nostalgic commentary.

Today I drew #13, my friends and fellow One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest cast mates.

First, a little disclaimer. Parts of this piece were originally posted on my site (www.edhumphries.com) in the wake of our final show. That said, that was almost two years ago so even if you read it then, it might be fresh once again. At t... Continue reading »

Instant Karma Resolution Day 12 – Cold Case

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. Each day, I will randomly draw a name from my Friends List and make that person the subject of a status update where I will cull from memory some funny or interesting anecdote about the person. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. When you’ve been selected, I will also post this note to your wall and tag 5 of our mutual acquaintances in the hopes it will spur some nostalgic commentary.

Today I drew #12, my old friend Brian MacDonald.

Yesterday, I waxed philosophically about the glory of Facebook, and social networking in general, and its profound impact on our lives – its ability to reconnect the dots across time and space and draw former friends back into a divine constellation.

My reunion with my... Continue reading »

Instant Karma Resolution Day 11 – Face Facts

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. Each day, I will randomly draw a name from my Friends List and make that person the subject of a status update where I will cull from memory some funny or interesting anecdote about the person. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. When you’ve been selected, I will also post this note to your wall and tag 5 of our mutual acquaintances in the hopes it will spur some nostalgic commentary.

Today we’re on #11. The answer: Sharon Dembinski, Scott Erlandson, Sarah Collins. The question: “Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?” And neither has Tracy Menchi Rifai, Kristen Burke Gouthro, Dan McNally or George Anderson. Nor so many more of you. Not that I wouldn’t love to have you stop by for a s... Continue reading »

Instant Karma Resolution Day 10 – Pretty in Pink

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. Each day, I will randomly draw a name from my Friends List and make that person the subject of a status update where I will cull from memory some funny or interesting anecdote about the person. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. When you’ve been selected, I will also post this note to your wall and tag 5 of our mutual acquaintances in the hopes it will spur some nostalgic commentary.

Today I drew #10 – my friend Rich Gobeil.

Of all the people who pledge allegiance to my core group of compadres, Rich is trumped by only one other as the longest lasting member. The other guy, who shall remain nameless unless he chooses to out himself, will get his day in court at the end of this grand experi... Continue reading »

Instant Karma Resolution Day 9 – Crowded House

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. Each day, I will randomly draw a name from my Friends List and make that person the subject of a status update where I will cull from memory some funny or interesting anecdote about the person. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. When you’ve been selected, I will also post this note to your wall and tag 5 of our mutual acquaintances in the hopes it will spur some nostalgic commentary.

Today I drew #9 – my friend Sarah Phillips.

A couple of years back, I wrote a piece for The Ed Zone where I espoused on the true nature of “Home”. At the time, Andi and I had just crested a major milestone when we performed the mental gymnastics necessary to deduce that we had lived in our Dudley abode longer than any other house or ... Instant Karma Resolution Day 8 – The King of Kong

Here’s how my 2010 Instant Karma Resolution works. I’ll do this once a day until I work my way through the entire list. Today I drew #8 – my friend Chris Kiatos.

So far, this project has drawn friends from various stages of my life. We’ve had the old high school pals. The college buddies. The prison bunkmates and Alaskan Governors? You betcha’. People who at some point in the last three decades plus stepped onto the stage and made ... Continue reading »
