One of the perks of this gig is reading some of the crazy answers I get sent. In Round 1, when I asked what “Conjunction Junction’s” function was, about 1/4 of you thought we were taking the MCAS and gave me textbook definitions of what a conjunction does. We’re not taking the college boards people, I just want to know if you’ve seen Back to School.

The Best Show You’re Still Not Watching – Friday Night Lights
I wrote this piece (see below) a couple of years back, during Friday Night Lights’ freshman season. At the time, I valued the show so highly that I was absolutely certain it was doomed to failure. As I repost this, we are mere days away from the launch of their 3rd season on NBC - a season that I have already seen in its entirety.
You see, FNL was on the chopping block almost since its inception. The ratings just aren’t there for a show that films on location and thus costs more to make than most. That the location shoot adds to the authenticity, allowing Dillon, TX to live and breathe as a vital supporting character doesn’t matter much to the suits who just want blockbuster numbers to kick start their careers. Nothing wrong with a prestige piece.

We’re getting a little separation at the top, but not much. I really think this contest (almost a week old) is still anyone’s game. Once you put the finishing touches on today’s submission, I’ll give you the weekend off and then we’ll be back on Monday for the Back 9. Here we are… Round 1 of The Breakin’ Big Hair Brawl. Many of you participated in the Ho Ho Ho Throwdown so you should know the rules but just in case all that egg nog fried your brain or you’re new to the game, here goes.

The Breakin’ Big Hair Brawl – 80′s Trivia Contest
In a bid to provide further fodder to those of you who claim I have way too much time on my hands, I am back with another quasi-quiz show to help while away these nasty winter months. Before you go calling DSS, please note that I concoct these things after the house has been turned down for the evening, the kids are in bed and the rest of you are nestled snug on your couch traipsing through The Hills or pining over Bromance. Yeah yeah, I doth protest too much.
Anyway, starting next Monday – January 5, 2008 – we will launch a new trivia contest on these pages, similar in structure to The Ho Ho Ho Throwdown that I’ve run the past couple of Decembers.
