Aria at Three

As we bring this busy month to a close, it’s only fitting that I get to shutter the Spring and welcome the summer months with a tribute to my blossoming flower, Aria Leigh.

Today, our little princess leaps beyond her toddler years and forges a path into little girlhood as she turns 3 years old. Now, I know some posit that ages 2 and 3 mark those toddler years but it’s probably a matter of personal choice. And as Aria, who has begun to display her own fierce personality, would attest – she’s not a toddler, she’s a little girl. Or, beautiful princess might be more apt.

Beautiful indeed. Andi and I are blessed to have such a beautiful, inquisitive, caring, funny, thoughtful and playful little girl to compliment the joyous tidings her big brother brings forth in equal measure each and every day. The... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘There’s No Place Like Home Parts 2 & 3′ – 4.13 & 4.14

There’s no place like home. (Click) There’s no place like home. (Click) There’s no place like home. (Click).

Damn, I’m still here… and looking awfully ridiculous in these ruby red slippers.

Well, that does it. Another season done. Another series of puzzles to ponder in the agonizing nine-month wait until Season 5 starts up. When next we meet again, we’ll have turned the page to 2009. A new President will be in office. Gas prices will finally peak at $48.15 a gallon, up significantly from the previous high of $16.23 that afflicted at least 42 of our continental United States. And the Red Sox will have won their 3rd World Championship in Five Years (you know they’re just doing it for Jack and his Dad).

But, we’ve been through this before. We had the long layover last year followed by t... Continue reading »

In Ed’s Head… Old Man Indy

One thing that makes me sad today… Old Man Indy.

Over the holiday weekend, I had the opportunity to take in the latest Indy flick – Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The screening came midway through the super-sized holiday weekend and just at the moment that the nagging nasal drip I had been tussling with had morphed into a full-blown chest cold. It also came mere hours after I closed the lid on the kids’ birthday celebration – where we capped this birthday month with a combined party (our second) for Aria and Colin and 12 of their closest cohorts. So, despite my fatigue and the phantom menace that was plaguing my sinus cavities, I grabbed my fedora and headed out to the local multiplex to fulfill my destiny – to see the latest Indiana Jones flick on its opening weekend – just a... LostWinds – Nintendo Wii

Note:   As I wrote awhile back, I am currently on the staff of Adrenaline Vault, a game review website. I joined AVault in January and subsequently faced a drought of games. That said, the floodgates have started to open and over the last month I have had 3 reviews published with 2 waiting in the wings (I believe they’ll be up next week). As I am using this site to chronical anything I write, I’ve decided to reprint the reviews here as well. On slow news days, I’ll sprinkle them in. The following review is one of the ‘waiting in the wings’ items but I actually liked this game (I’ve played some real dogs of late – purely becuase they were assigned to me) so I decided to lead with this one.

One of the hallmarks of this current generation ... Continue reading »

In Ed’s Head… The Last Four Words Spoken in Iron Man

One thing that I love today… the last four words spoken in Iron Man.

Before I go further, I’ll stop for a spell and allow anyone who hasn’t seen the film (and has a desire to do so) to jump off the bus. The last thing I want to do with The Ed Zone is turn this into a spoiler site.

All right – now that they’re gone – I’ll pick right back up where I left off – specifically at the very moment Iron Man leaves off.

“I am Iron Man.”

Actually, Robert Downey Jr.’s full delivery – to a crowded press conference is – “The truth is… I am Iron Man.” And with that, Iron Man closes out with a nice subversive jolt to the long-established convention that comic book heroes have to live secretive, sheltered lives in a bid to safeguard their true ide... Lost – ‘There’s No Place Like Home’ – 4.12

This time of year is always bittersweet. As our favorite shows come to an end, we look ahead to the summer and see nothing but a vacant wasteland – the color of television tuned to a dead channel. At the same token, we see bright sunny days meaning we can actually get our collective asses off the couch and actually enjoy some fresh air for a change.

And the loss of Lost means I don’t have to feel the pressure of my fierce editors (that would be you, you demanding Constant Readers) bellowing at me to produce this week’s installment of my weekly observations the moment the clock hits 11:00 p.m. EST Thursday eve.

That said, we know that when the last moment ticks off the two hour season finale scheduled to air on Thursday May 29th that unlike most other shows, we have a long wait ahead of us. May 29th... Continue reading »

Chatham at Six

Late April to early June is a busy time for celebration in my household. Every family member has reason to shine during these fleeting few months.

Starting in April, we encounter our yellow lab Abby’s birthday. That leads quickly to Colin’s birthday on May 5th which is immediately followed by Mother’s Day where we try to find words enough to express how much Andi means to us. Later in the month is Aria’s birthday which caps May off and leads us a week later to my birthday.

But wedged in the middle of it all is Chatham’s birthday. This year our sweet little black lab is turning six years old and in the last year she has acquired the scattershot grays that betray her otherwise youthful appearance.

You know how every once in awhile you run into someone who proclaims themselves an accident... Continue reading »

Mother’s Day

What kid hasn’t heard the following when pestering their Mom or Dad on their respective holidays of why there isn’t a “Kid’s Day”?

“Every day is Kid’s Day!!!” comes the same sing-songy response. Not that I ever blitzkrieged my own precious Mom on her well-deserved day. But my sisters? Yeah, I’m quite certain I spied them lobbying for their own festive occasion from time-to-time.

Well, the world has got it all wrong. Every day is Mother’s Day. At least – it damn well should be.

Over the last two months, I’ve had the occasion to spend a couple of weeks at home. The first time was in March as I recuperated from surgery. The second was just this past week as I sliced a wedge of my vacation pie in order to get some of those nagging home repairs and spring cleanin... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘Cabin Fever’ – 4.11

I think I’m coming down with Cabin Fever.

It’s episodes like last night mythology heavy installment, Cabin Fever, that prove how intricately plotted and dramatically dense this show can be. This is why I watch the show. While getting answers can be rewarding, sometimes it’s more fun to keep tunneling down the rabbit’s hole. As long as you feel faith in the show’s creators to keep the narrative on track, it can be deliriously invigorating to be plopped in the midst of mystery with scant clues to go on and try to work your way back to some semblance of a clue. That’s why I got hooked on Twin Peaks two decades ago and why I spent the better part of the 90’s paging through The X-Files.

And it’s why I grooved on every little morsel and clue doled out in last night’s Locke-centric Cabin Fever... Continue reading »

Colin at Five

Has it really been half a decade since Andi and I took the Nestea plunge into parenthood?

Today, my little man Colin, turns 5 years old. The Cinco de Mayo nino was born on May 5, 2003. It’s true what they say – you remember every waking moment of that day – and of course, every moment of that first day is a waking one as there is no sleep to be mined then (or in the days to follow). Of course, before pure exhaustion infiltrated our lives, that first day was most special as anticipation morphed into introduction and our former bond of two blossomed immediately into a full-fledged family.

Five years ago today.

Now we sit on the precipice of Kindergarten. Colin is already registered and looking forward to the segueway from his 2.5 hour stint at preschool to the full day rigors... Continue reading »
