Lost – ‘The Constant’ – 4.5

mouse.jpg

Sometime I envy those people who have the will power to wait the season out and catch it all on DVD. After episodes like last night’s, the wait between installments can seem endless. It must be nice to just sit down and catch them all one after another. Alas, I lack that restraint.

That said, there’s also something to be said for being left hanging. When a show is this drenched in mystery and atmosphere, taking a spell to sift through it all and come up with our own theories about what’s really going on is part of the fun.

Readers of my regular post know that I am prone to offer my wild interpretations of the various mysteries before us. And last night’s episode offered up a veritable cornucopia of evidence to support my crackpot theories of time travel and altered dimensions. It appears, I may not be too far off course. I’ll get into that below.

Last note. I’ve... Continue reading »

Tempus Fugit

Time flies, baby.

At least, that’s the first thought I had when we received the non-descript envelope in the mail yesterday. It had come from Colin’s school – the return address marked ‘Early Education.’ Inside, were the enrollment forms for Kindergarten.

That gave me pause. Where had the 5 years gone? Granted, he’s not five yet, but he is knocking on the door.

As if the admission forms weren’t evidence enough that our little boy was all grown up, Colin issued the following proclamation when I asked him if he wanted his bath first or second last week.

Colin: First! But I’m not having a bath. I’m having a shower. Baths are for kids.
Me: Well, what do you think you are?
Colin: I’m an adult.

So, I have him e-filing my 1040 right now. Hey, his rates beat that CPA that lives down the road (in a van d... Continue reading »

I’m getting some work done.

To commemorate this Oscar season and celebrate the triumphant return of those starving writers, I’m going all Hollywood on ya’ and getting a nose job.

I’m serious. It’s all so scandalously true.

On March 17th 2008, I’ll walk in a Q-Bert and walk out who knows what. A Karl Malden? An Adrian Brody? A Marsha Brady? The choices are endless.

To be honest, the nose job is just the side-effect of a very real surgery that I have scheduled. I finally made the call and on that fateful day in March (two days removed from the Ides), I’ve got a date with destiny in the form of a surgical repair to correct my deviated septum.

As some of you may know, I’ve been plagued by some nagging health concerns for the better part of the last two years. It all started in the summer of 2006 – when a little diagnosis of prostatitis (yes –... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘Eggtown’ – 4.4

boathouse.jpg

Before I dive into this week’s analysis, I thought I’d provide a little public service announcement and point you to this week’s edition of Entertainment Weekly which provides a pretty illuminating talk with Lost producers – Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof. Although JJ Abrams created the show, it’s Cuse and Lindelof who have really shaped the narrative (along with expert support from a stable of excellent writers). Cuse and Lindelof have inked a number of scripts – usually the more mythology heavy installments. These guys are ‘show runners’ in every sense of the word and what they have to say about what they plan on revealing this season and the seeds they’re planting for the next two are thought provoking. They also shoot down some wild Internet theories. As they explain, “sometimes a bracelet is just a bracelet”. Anyway, it’s a good read so check it out on n... Continue reading »

Rocket’s Red Glare

clemens.jpg

Crash and burn.

How much longer must we tune in to witness Rocket’s failure to launch this ill-fated attempt to clear his ‘good name’.

As his trusted attorney Rusty Hardin feverishly works to re-plot Rocket’s ever changing trajectory, I’m reminded of this guy who once skipped town and headed North despite his vehement assertions that at heart, he was a Southern Boy, and if he couldn’t play ball here in Beantown then the only place he’d rather be is back home on the range.

Maybe I’m misremembering it, but isn’t this the same good ol’ boy who famously declared he wanted to either stay in Boston or move closer to home and then quickly changed his tune to ‘O’ Canada’ once the Blue Jays came calling.

I just don’t trust Roger Dodger. Simply put, Roger Clemens is a big fat liar.

As y’all know by know, Clemens appeared last week in... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘The Economist’ – 4.3

island.jpg

In what’s becoming a regular feature of these Lost post-mortems, I offer up my latest intel on the post-strike landscape. Here’s what I’m hearing is the definitive plan for the rest of the season.

There will be 13 episodes (down from 16 but up from the 8 we would have received had the strike not ended when it did). While 8 Episodes were completed prior to the strike, the producers are actually going to air 7, take a 4-week break (mid-March to mid-April) and then return to air the remaining 6. This will allow them to complete Production on the remaining Episodes. The reason they chose to break at Episode 7 versus Episode 8 (which is already in the can) is Episode 7 supposedly ends on a better break point.

With 3 episodes removed from the season, the producers are working with ABC to add 2 to 3 additional episodes to the next two season’s orders to bring it back to the o... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘Confirmed Dead’ – 4.2

newspaper.jpg

Good news. For the last week or so, there have been numerous rumblings from all ends of the Earth that the Writer’s Strike is on the verge of being settled. Many believe that the strike will officially come to an end this weekend – when the Writer’s Guild meets with its members. By Monday morning, they could all be back to work.

Why do I bring this up in my Lost dispatch? With the ‘End‘ beginning on such a high note, the truncated 8 Episode Season seems like pure torture. This mystery continues to deepen and it would be a shame if all we got were six more eps and then out. Granted, there is bound to be some sort of layover as the production needs to ramp back up but I’ve read rumors that the Lost crew actually had the scripts for all 16 Episodes completed – only 8 had been delivered and filmed. That may prove to be good news as the scr... Continue reading »

Shot of Adrenaline

videogames.jpg

I’ve been franchised, baby.

Today I begin writing for Adrenaline Vault where I am featured in today’s post covering the Most Anticipated Games of 2008. You can find my piece on Page 3.

Yup, today marks the first day that my inane ramblings have burst forth from The Ed Zone and have found purchase on another plot of web-based real estate. If you Constant Readers get the chance, scamper on over to Adrenaline Vault (or Avault) and you can spy yours’ truly in print on a site that sees a much more robust readership than my own private haven of scum and villainy typically attracts. That’s right, your little boy is all grown up now.

For those wondering what the hell I’m talking about, I’ll break it down in more simplistic terms. It seems I have got myself a little freelance gig on another corner of the Internet. Here’s a little background for ya’.Continue reading »

Lost – ‘The Beginning of the End’ – 4.1

4x01cap-0847.jpg

What once was Lost has now been found.

How great is it to have our show back – although Lost’s triumphant return is tinged with a touch of melancholy as well know that the Writer’s Strike has effectively sliced this season’s 16 Episode Arc into 8. You’ll recall that last season, producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse successfully negotiated an end date for the series – getting ABC to agree to three 16-Episode Seasons which would allow the show to wrap-up its narrative in the Spring of 2010. With the knowledge of their fate in hand, Lindelof and Cuse were reenergized and no longer had to plot the show for some nebulous end point, meaning each hour from here on out would be in service of the story and not simply to keep the wheels spinning.

So while we may get a truncated season this year, at least we know we’ll get the back eight episodes at some point sho... Continue reading »
