Red Light Redistrict

If you ask me, Boston is officially a two sport town. Baseball and Football. Sox and Pats. They’re the only things that matter. Once football ends in January (and through our frequent good fortune of late – sometimes early February) it’s just a brief three week layover until baseball talk and prognostication begins in earnest.

Spare me your Bruins and Celtics speak. They’re has been teams of a bygone error.

Although I’m lapsed of late, I was a veritable WEEI Sports Radio junkie for the better part of this decade and found it increasingly comforting that the number one sports station in New England chose to focus on the Sox and Pats and gave hockey and basketball the short shrift. Of course, there were the frequent yahoos (the men whom time had forgotten) who would call in and berate host Glenn Ordway (once a former Celtics color commentator)... Continue reading »

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess review

This is the reason I traded in my 360.

Last summer, as some of my readers may attest, I made the bold decision to scrap my Xbox 360 (of which I had owned for such a brief time – Microsoft hadn’t enough time to brick my system) – all in favor of the Wii. At the time, I had an epiphany, the nexus of this thought directive running straight back to my childhood. While I appreciate the wonders the 360 can produce, I realized that something was missing in these new high tech wonderments. So many titles looked like a billion dollars but under their shiny veneer, they lacked a soul.

I’ve been gaming for close to three full decades now. It’s an interest, a hobby, a passion. And, thankfully, it’s no longer child’s play as my generation (the NES Generation) scoured the charred remains of the Neolithic Atari Age and brought forth a fiery phoenix that... Continue reading »

ZonEd Back In

Posted by Sean

In honor of today marking the one year anniversary of this here blog, I have done a little blog refresher-makeover-thingie. Oh, and it is also a little surprise for the owner since he had no idea I was going to do this.

I think we were all worried over the past month, but it seems he’s found his way once again and I hope my inspired effort keeps that engine chugging down the track!

There are still a few little bugs and layout oddities depending on what browser you are using, but overall, it’s looking pretty good. Let me know what you think — good or bad — and what you like or don’t like.

Hey, feel free to make suggestions too. I’ll even allow you to demand back the Fleet Bank theme… ;)

24 – ’10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.’ – 6.5

One more hour and I’m all caught up. After the shock of Hour 4’s wham-bam finale – with Curtis and LA being dealt critical blows – we pick right up with the city plunged in chaos.

1.   The episode opens in the White House as President Palmer and his staffers gather around a television, incredulous to the images beaming out of LA. Mad props to the effects techs that mocked up a frighteningly realistic mushroom cloud hovering over the City of Angels in that news feed. The thing is photo-realistic and it seems they got the details absolutely correct – with its slight size on par for that payload’s estimated yield. Early estimates reveal that the bomb killed “at a best case scenario – 12,000 people.” Damn – that’s gotta’ exceed Jack’s annual kill count by six or several. Our boy better get cracking if he’s gonna’ beat his personal best.Continue reading »

24 fans rejoice.

The show is back in a huge way and with the triumphant return of the Jack Bauer Power Hour comes the return to regularly scheduled Blog updates. As for you non-24 Hour Party People, not to worry, the various projects that have siphoned my free time have passed critical mass and I should be posting more frequent updates on all manner of topics in the very near future. But enough about me, let’s talk Jack.

Before I dive into my observations and asides, I wanted to post a brief review of the first four hours. From minute one through the catastrop... Continue reading »

Hair today. Gone tomorrow.

Well, that about sums up my latest Beard experiment. What once was found, has now been lost… AGAIN!!!

It all goes back to that damned Return of the King. I remember somewhere around Hour 15 of that 2003 epic when my mind began to wander. It seemed every hero sported some kick-ass face fur. Yeah, those were real men, baby. Now I’m secure enough to admit that when I first gazed upon Viggo’s well-kept scruff, I thought to myself, “Yeah, a beard ought to make a man of me.” Hey, things could have been much worse. Can you imagine me with Frodo’s Frampton Comes Alive do?

So three years back, I began the first of what would quickly become an annual rite. Year after year, the same little dance developed where sometime in the gulf between Thanksgiving and Christmas – when my office clears and the eyewitnesses dwindle to manageable amou... Continue reading »

Ring of Fire

The title refers to those Three Red Lights of Doom that every XBox 360 owner fears. If the circle on the console face turns from green to red you are effectively screwed. Last year, post launch, reports were rampant that more than the usual 1% of hardware was manufacturing. That points to a problem on the line somewhere. One year later, these reports persist without much drop-off in units malfunctioning. Reading IGN editor Matt Casamassina’s account of having to return three units in one year is slightly frightening. I know it doesn’t happen to all systems and I know all consoles are prone to issues in this day and age where more complex hardware rests under the hood – but why can’t they make systems the way they used to. I have a 21-year old NES in my basement that is in perfect working order.

Where did I go?

Nowhere, fast, that’s where. I apologize for the absence of new material. After one year and 136 true Blogs (those measly little Asides don’t count) I figured I was due for a little R n’ R. That and some pesky work projects conspired to drain the glass of its sand, leaving me with precious little time to log on and regale you all with the sordid details of my so-called life.

Since I’ve been gone there have been some happenings that deserve comment. I have a string of Blog entries coming up – hopefully the start of a rejuvenated Ed Zone – but some of these little ditties don’t warrant exclusive playtime, so I figured I’d run ‘em through shuffle and lay down a few fat beats here. Actually, there’s only one main event that I feel the need to apply comment to.

This past Sunday evening I settled... Continue reading »
