Wii Play

I decided to use this column to talk about my initial experience with the Wii and its unique control scheme. In addition, I’ll touch upon the first batch of games I’ve dipped into. Now, these won’t be traditional reviews as I haven’t come close to completing 10% of any given title – but I have messed around enough to understand how each controls and whether they are worth a purchase or not. Simply put – are they any damn fun?

First the controller.

With the Wii, Nintendo opted to turn its back on participating in the escalating arms race and let the superpowers (Microsoft and Sony) duke that out. Nintendo’s foray into the last generation – with their Gamecube – was a failure at retail and their precious market share had already eroded enough that there was just no way a new graphics... That’s Mii

Well, after a long and tireless search (man – you try waiting four days after launch to get a system) – I finally grabbed hold of my Wii.

… and with that statement, let the ad offers for UpSkirt.com come rolling in. This site could use the extra foot traffic and ad revenue. Hey, we ain’t above shilling our morale fiber here at The Ed Zone.

All right, we now return to our regularly scheduled programming. Where were we? Oh yes, me clutching my Wii. (Cha-Ching!!!)

Anyway, I found the Wii on the unlikeliest of days – Black Friday a.k.a. THE BIGGEST F’NNNNNNNNN SHOPPING DAY OF THE WHOLE F’NNNNNNNN YEAR!!! And I am happy to report that I didn’t have to rouse my sleepy head at 3:00 a.m. and stand in the cold November rain to procure the object of my affection. And no one took a shot at me.

Nope,... Continue reading »

Wii Will Not Be Ignored

zelda1.jpg

So after much waffling, I have decided to go full bore on acquiring the Nintendo Wii. (Whew, now that that decision has been made – I can return my focus to more pressing matters… like, does anyone know where TomKat is registered?)

Anyway – I had been perched atop a fence staring down both sides. The Wii was luring me with its innovative control, killer first party titles and a huge heaping of nostalgia. Essentially it is 2,000 teraflops of comfort food. (I know – it doesn’t have that power – but go with me and my dramatic license).

On the flip side, the PS3 and XBOX 360 punched me in the nuts and called me a Nancy-boy if I dared dream of putting Yoshi through his paces. Aligning the Hammer of Dawn (or whatever the hell Gears of War calls its orbiting satellite of doom) straight at my noggin, my... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘I Do’ – 3.6

lostsawyer.jpg

I know when y’all asked me to post my observations on the very last Lost episode of this mini-season in quick fashion, I looked you deep in the eyes and proclaimed a most sincere ‘I Do’ – and yet, here I am, one week removed and just now moseying on by to drop a few lines. I apologize sincerely. It won’t happen again. Not this year, at least.

Anyway – on with the show.

1.   Chalk broken marriages up as another uniting thread for our sole survivors. If a survivor hasn’t killed a person, then you can be damn’ sure they’ve deep-sixed a marriage. Jack and Kate fall squarely in that camp. And look who Kate went and got herself hitched to – Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) – who has traded in his dusty chaps for Dade County digs.

2.   Other than the shotgun wedding, Kate’s flashback only revealed one... Continue reading »

Lost – ‘The Cost of Living’ – 3.5

costoflivingcap619.jpg

I’m a bit late getting this post out – seeing as how we’re sitting at the near precipice of this season staring down the last episode of 2006 that is due to air tomorrow night. Still, I wanted to make sure I posted my observations on the Eko-centric ‘The Cost of Living‘ before dropping my thoughts on tomorrow’s night’s ‘I Do’ (guest starring Nathan Fillion) – which I promise to post by the weekend.

Anyway, this was a good episode that offered a lot to chew on. My thoughts:

1.   While the night belonged to Eko, I’ll get to his fate in a moment. Before touching on the interesting questions raised by Eko’s tragic end – and the subtle answers offered up – I wanted to touch on two other revelations.

2.   The first involve... Continue reading »
