Mass Charade

jungle11.JPG

I’m a huge fan of Halloween - moreso now than I was as a kid. Sure, recharging your Trick or Treat energies through a downed Giant Pixie Stick at the intersection of Gale and Linus Streets has its charms - but it wasn’t until my latter years - somewhere around the point I hit my half-life (let’s say - 21) that I really embraced fading into another persona. Losing the 9-to-5 digs and adopting a caveman’s gait or a castaway’s lot, just really seemed to mesh with me. Oh yeah, for some reason my costumes usually involve big, burly beards. What’s that say ’bout me???

As a Halloween treat, I decided to drop you another installment in my oh-so popular, Picture Pages segment. There is no rhyme nor reason to this post. I just grabbed a number of pics taken over the last decade - depiciting me and my homies getting our ‘ghost’ on. Feel free to comment below and if anyone has any pics of themselves in kick-ass costumes, send them my way and I’ll post a sequel later this week.

Oh yeah, do yourself a favor and check out my cousin Jason’s recent post on this year’s Halloween costume - and the lengths he went to perfect his cartoon realism. Good story, great costume and a nice read.

1. Starsky & Friends

Here it is - this site’s first ever video clip. This was taken during a Halloween party at my Mansfield apartment in October 1996 - just a few weeks after Andi and I started dating. Obviously my 70’s mojo was working wonders on my dame, as she’s still hanging with Vince the 70’s Cop some 10 years later. Keep an eye out for Justin as CM and Rich - who showed up at a costume party sans costume - decked out in whatever we could find around the house. Think of him as an Everything Bagel.

(Do I have to remind you to JUST PRESS PLAY?)

2. MookieBaby

At the height of the Beanie Baby craze, this 5′ 10″ moppet was one of the hardest figures to get hold of. Fortunately, I tracked one down. He was a prized show piece for a number of years. Had I only the foresight to pawn him off on eBay, I could have made a mint.

3. Bennifer 8

This was taken at Noelle and Sean’s Halloween shin-dig somewhere after the turn of this century. They went as JLo and Ben Affleck (respectively). Sean’s interpretation of Ben is a ‘friendly mullet’ - which only goes to underscore the fact that you should never attend a Halloween Party dressed as yourself. Where’s the fun in that?

4. Darth Bald

Joe jurywrigged this pre-op Darth costume a few years before Lucas would depict Anakin’s decline onscreen. Here, the Fanboy Furies conspire to dress Darth as nothing more than a creepy Mr. Clean. As Annie so famously once said, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

5. Britney and Friends

Depicted here is Britney Spears, a vampire nurse and the Angel of Death. Basically, the MTV2 Thursday night line-up.

6. MTV Undead

Now we come to this site’s second offical video. Three more and I get bought by Google. This was taken at my Halloween Party in Nashua, NH where I went as Kurt Cobain: Undead (a tribute to Kurt’s famous Unplugged gig). Keep an eye out for Andi, who in 1997, was still hanging with this homie… and still horrified. Also, Joe appears as either The Angel of Death or Courtenay Love.

7. Sir No-Pants-A-Lot

I know this photo has appeared on these pages before - but you wear this outfit just once, you gotta’ know I’m gonna’ get mileage out of it. Dana can be found working weekends at King Richards Faire where he rocks as Beer Wench #31.

8. Unfrozen Cave Man Betty Crocker & Friends

Your honor. I’m just a Cave Man. Your world frightens and confuses me. When I spy a tripolyconvection oven with it’s multiple layers of transistent heat, I want to head for the hills shrieking “Chaka… Save me from this hoodoo magic.” But there is one thing I do know. When you stick a toothpick in a pan of brownies and it comes out wet, there’s plenty more baking yet.

9. The L Word - Season 1

Showtime recast and reshot the pilot episode when some of the actresses proved difficult. Gone went the gypsy, the 60’s spy chick and The Gap Band.

10. One More From the Wedding Album

Or was this the engagement photo? Six years, two kids, two dogs and two houses done scrambled me brain.

11. CastAway - 3 Years Later

For the love of all that’s good and groovy… somebody please rescue me!!!

[...] Anyway, I wanted to post a photo of my Halloween costume this year because I was so happy to have had one in a while. Okay, so that is a lie. You can see my last one from 2003, which is or isn’t a while, over on Ed’s blog (he was Tom Hanks from Castaway again, which is still a kick ass costume three years later). I don’t know if I can consider me as Affleck a costume since he seems indicate I dressed as myself, but whatever. [...]
