Get Lost

Tomorrow night marks the third season premiere of Lost.

This year – the Lost producers have been granted their wish for one continuous season with no reruns or breaks. Well, sort of. As this type of serial drama is best experienced in one contained stream – ABC has scheduled this season in two arcs. The first six episodes begin airing tomorrow night, Wednesday October 4th and run through November 8th. Then there’s a brief hiatus during which the Taye Diggs’ drama Day Break gets a crack at recognition, followed by the return of Lost for its remaining 16 episodes from January through May. Cable and DVD have conspired to push the net’s hand and that’s a huge win for both the auteurs and the audience. No more of that annoying 2 weeks on – 5 weeks off jitterbug.

The scheduling has allowed the writers to neatly plot out two arcs – one mini series culminating in a ‘jaw dropping’ cliffhanger (or so the rumors go) followed by the resolution in ‘07. My feeling is this should allow the writers to trim some of the fat that the show’s critics claimed had grown around the middle in its sophomore season.

As if to bolster that claim, the few media columnists that have seen the season premiere are singing its praises. This quote – lifted from the Ausiello Report on TV Guide.com (also look for Michael Ausiello’s weekly Wednesday post of rumors and innuendo – a decent read) – has me anticipating great things.

I just finished watching the most anticipated 43 minutes of the TV season (aka Wednesday’s Lost premiere) and I’m virtually speechless. From the fraktastic opening sequence to the chilling final moments, the four-star episode (penned by Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams) had me teetering on the edge of my swivel chair the entire time. It easily ranks as one of the best Lost eps — possibly the best — since the pilot. An amazing feat since it only features four series regulars!

Consider me sold. As always, I’ll be back to post my observations. This year, I will offer up observations on 24 and Lost – and may steal a page from Sean’s Tellyman and provide a general wrap-up of the rest of the week’s programs (the one’s I’ve watched – of course.)

Now, Get Lost!!!
