PS3 - Not For Me
Looks like I made the right decision. With knowledge of 3 new systems coming down the pipeline - Microsoft’s XBox 360, Sony’s Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Revolution - I had to choose one. Sony - which promised a lot at last year’s E3 conference (including a system launch in Spring 2006) finally blinked under mounting pressure by industry and financial analysts. Now they’re saying they’ll launch worldwide in November 2006. Bill Gates just wrapped up most of 2006 - although a dog fight looms.

Yes, this will represent the third time I’ve bypassed Sony’s videogame offerings. I’m not sure why–I just never seem to want a Playstation. I bought an N64 over a Playstation for games like Rogue Squadron, Road Rash 64 and Super Smash Bros., then went with an Xbox for Halo, KOTOR and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters (though for the record, I didn’t even get an Xbox until Christmas 2003).
I’ll probably get an Xbox 360 eventually, when the price comes down and there are a plethora of cool games. Or when Halo 3 comes out.
For now, though, I’ve got a new computer, and that’s been the focus of most of my game-playing.

According to something else I read today, Sony will release the PS3 on all three fronts in November just like Microsoft did. They are planning 1 million units per month. If they can actually get them out for the holiday season here, they may have a chance, but otherwise, I think Xbox 360 continues to build a lead. In fact, they could drop their price a bit for the holiday season while PS3 launches with a $500+ price tag. All because of a Blu-Ray disc that no one needs right now. Microsoft got it right, launch as soon as possible and provide upgrades/add-ons later.

Most analysts feel that even if Sony hits their target of a global launch in November - and that’s a big ‘if’ - they’re just going to offer a repeat of last holiday’s 360 fiasco (too few units for too large a demand) which will drive more customers to Microsoft - which will have the supply stream cranking by that point. So essentially - even if Sony hits market this winter - Microsoft wins. Apparently Sony stock has been hit big-time over the last year - they have discontinued a number of money-losing products (including most of their plasma line) and the PS3 launch in Spring 2006 was the one item that stockholders felt would reverse this downward trend. News of the delay sent stock prices down even further. I don’t think Microsoft can gain number one market share during this generation - but I do believe they will shrink the gap and will be a solid #2 - and in the growing online gaming world - XBox Live will dominate.
Also - for anybody on the fence over which system to buy - predictions are that the graphics should be very close across systems and there will be very few system excluives (more cross system titles) meaning - it’s really a coin toss.
